Reducing the Environmental Impact of the average weekly shop.

In an ideal world we would all buy our shopping from the local farm shop, from British producers, or better still, grow it in our own gardens. However, the reality actually finds the majority of people needing to shop in their local supermarket.

So, let's hope that Tesco, Sainsburys, Waitrose, Co-op or M&S are your supermarket of choice!

Bosses of these 5 supermarkets have promised to halve the environmental impact of your weekly shop.

The supermarkets will be working with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) on the new “retailers” ‘Commitment to Nature’ pledge launched on the 6th November, marking Nature Day at COP26.

Retailers are committing to halve the environmental impact of supply chains and upstream activities, looking into the following:

● Deforestation

● Land-use conversion

● Marine and Land Stewardship

● Sustainable Diets

● Food Waste

● Food Packaging

In a joint statement from the famous 5:

‘As chief executives of leading UK food retailers, we recognise that a future without nature is a future without food.’

Co-op’s Group executive Steve Murrells added; ‘The food industry is central in co-operating for a fairer, more responsible world to reduce the negative impact of our operations on the environment.’

The 5 supermarkets that signed up to the commitment represent more than half of the UK’s individual food shoppers, giving millions of families the opportunity to help reduce their own carbon footprint.

Do you supply any of the famous 5? Do you need help to reduce your carbon footprint in order to satisfy this commitment?
