As part of our management services, we helped one of our many cherry farm clients do their bit for the environment.
Having seen a lot of press recently about supermarkets wanting to remove the amount of plastic in their stores, they came to us saying they would like to increase their efforts to minimise their environmental impact, ensuring their cherries are sustainably grown and packaged so that they offer the best possible product to their customers, the supermarkets.
Greenpeace have reported that UK supermarkets produce 800,000 tonnes of plastic every year.
Unfortunately, we are only starting to realise the scale of the plastic waste problem, but the solution is quite simple, make and use less plastic. They have even produced a supermarket plastic lead table to see which supermarkets are making the best progress.
As a result, more and more supermarkets are starting to talk about what they must do and our clients as suppliers must back them.
Compostable packaging
We did our research and found out most people where keen to get rid of plastic packaging on their food and have compostable packing instead.
Compostable packaging pots offer a sustainable solution to replace the commonly used plastic fruit punnets with or without hinged lids or a plastic film topping. These are used to prevent damage of the fruit and maintain freshness.
The compostable packaging is made from plant-based, recycled materials, and when disposed of correctly, can return to earth quickly and safely as soil.
Switching to compostable packaging will still ensure the quality of the fruit is maintained and the benefits to the environment are significant. Less carbon is needed to produce them, using them reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill and they don’t produce toxins as they are broken down.
