Asparagus Crop 2021

Updated: Sep 7, 2021

Asparagus supplies in the U.K decrease.

After last years amazingly sunny weather which seemed to start in April and continue right through to mid September. We were definitely spoilt with the lovely weather, however this year feeling like we had been waiting ages for the warm weather to come has had not only an impact on our wellbeing but a massive impact on farmer harvests this year.

I'd like to focus on Asparagus a crop I work very close with.

This years U.K crop was very slow to start resulting in a large decrease in crop harvest. This mainly due to the spring frosts that just kept on coming.

April 2021 was set to be the frostiest in the UK for 60 years.

An average of 13 days of air frosts was reported across the country, topping the 11 days seen in April 1970, according to provisional figures from the Met Office.

The below average temperatures and two months of drought have meant our British crop has really struggled this year.

Demand remained high right to the end of the season and we cannot extend the harvest season any further for fear it would deplete the crop for the following year.

As result there were at times a struggle to meet the suppliers needs. #britshasparagus #britishfarming

But for now that's all folk's! Its now time to say goodbye to the delightful #British spears until next year. Fingers crossed for better weather .
